Growing up in Jamaica was an unforgettable experience, not only for the incredible fruits, food, and beaches but also for the presence of many dogs and cats that were always around. While pets in the Caribbean are often treated differently than in North America—viewed more as working animals than fashion accessories—the love they provide transcends all geographical boundaries.
Over the years, I’ve frequently visited my grandmother, who lives in the Cayman Islands. A few years ago, a wild cat had her kittens in my grandmother’s yard. While the other kittens eventually dispersed, one stayed behind. My grandmother, who didn’t initially give the cat much attention, would occasionally offer it scraps of food. Yet, the cat kept returning, demonstrating loyalty that would soon develop into something even more special.
Fast forward five years, and my grandmother, now 98 years old, has begun experiencing the onset of dementia. Despite this, she and the cat have formed an incredible bond, one that offers mutual support. Every morning at 6 a.m., the cat greets my grandmother at the back door. My grandmother and her caregiver begin their daily walk, escorted by the cat to the neighbor’s property. The cat finds a shady spot and patiently waits as they complete their lap around the block. Upon their return, the cat greets them again, joins them in the backyard for some gardening, and then enjoys breakfast before disappearing for the rest of the day—only to return in the early evening for some belly rubs.
What’s remarkable is that despite the bond between them, my grandmother never physically touches the cat with her hands. Instead, she uses her foot (always wearing slippers) or her cane to give the cat the belly rubs it craves. Yet, their connection is filled with laughter and loyalty, showing just how powerful and healing the presence of an animal can be.
Animals, in their quiet way, have a calming influence that helps stave off loneliness. They provide companionship that doesn’t judge, argue, or contradict. Caring for an animal gives people a reason to get dressed and get moving, which is particularly important for seniors.
At Your Senior’s Concierge, we applaud senior living communities that allow residents to bring their furry friends along. These pets provide essential companionship and a sense of purpose that is invaluable during life’s later years.
